What happens in a session?

Counselling sessions are arranged by appointment and are one hour duration. The length of your consultation can be flexible.

There is the option to book double sessions, especially for the first meeting as there may be a lot of information you wish to get through in order to explain your present situation. Some clients have also added an extra 1/2 hour near the end of a standard session when they feel they are at a critical stage of the conversation and would like more time to explore. These options are dependent on the timetabling of other sessions on the day. There is no obligation to have longer than the standard consultation.

The first session is usually concerned with giving the client an opportunity to discuss their problem. Often it is the first time the client has talked about the problem to anyone and the act of trusting someone enough to divulge their thoughts and feelings is a therapeutic step in itself.

At the end of each consultation you will be asked how the session went for you. Your feedback is important in negotiating how we will proceed from there.

There are three modes available for counselling sessions:

  1. On-site: face-to-face session conducted in the consulting room at the surgery.

  2. Off-site: relevant to Walk and Talk sessions. Please see further information on the Counselling Methods and FAQ's page

  3. Home visit: face-to-face session conducted in the client's home. There is a surcharge on top of the normal hourly fee dependent on kilometres travelled from the surgery base. Home visits can generally only be offered after an initial consultation at the surgery.

  4. Skype: on-line counselling session in which both client and counsellor can see each other and talk in real time. This mode is best for those clients for whom distance, mobility or time is a preventive factor for meeting face-to-face. Further details on setting up a Skype session can be obtained by emailing me.

All counselling sessions are conducted according to strict ethical guidelines based on the Australian Counselling Association Code of Conduct. You will be asked to read and sign a consent form prior to your first counselling session. The issue of confidentiality will be thoroughly explained before we proceed.
