Individual Counselling

Individual sessions provide an opportunity for you to express and explore your thoughts, feelings and understandings in a respectful, non-blaming setting.

I view the client as the expert in their life; meaning that they are more knowledgeable about the intimate details of their life, and the events and people who have impacted their life than I can possibly be.

I also acknowledge that the client brings many resources to the counselling process; that they have skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to change the relationship that they have with their problem.

Human beings are meaning makers. The stories we have about our lives have been created by our unique perceptions and the interpretations we have made about events that have happened to us.

I use a Narrative approach which focuses on externalising the problem so that the client can separate themselves from the problem rather than feeling that they are the problem. This method opens the way for them to see alternative ways of being and responding. It also helps to identify the client's dominant stories, and can assist them to create alternative conclusions about their life.

Depending on the client and the nature of their issue, I also utilise Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Walk and Talk therapy, PhotoTherapy, and Mindfulness and Meditation techniques where appropriate.

I see individual clients experiencing difficulties in the following areas:

  • Behaviour change
  • Self-esteem
  • Self-confidence & Assertion
  • Life change issues
  • Depression
  • Grief and Loss
  • Anger
  • Stress management
  • Acceptance & Trust issues
  • Work related issues
  • Social difficulties
  • Motivation
  • Abuse issues
  • Negativity
  • Guilt & Shame
