De-clutter your life

Spring is traditionally a time for cleaning out the old and adopting the new and fresh.

When we think of de-cluttering our lives, we usually think of all the physical belongings that we've gathered over time that we really don't need anymore.

Our prior focus may have been on acquisition; friends, relationships, property, professional success, achieving ambitions, experiences and material possessions.

At some point, we may re-assess the role these elements play in our current life and whether they are enriching and meaningful for us.

However, shedding mental and emotional clutter can be overlooked because it's not always obvious but is arguably more important

Life transition, change, unexpected events or feeling stuck can prompt us to streamline our lives and examine what we do, the people we have around us, our obligations, and our choices.

By re-evaluating our lives, we can assess whether we are going in the direction we want to be, whether we are actually happy, and whether our path is congruent with who and how we want to be.

Previous focus may have been on acquisition: people, relationships, property, professional attainment, achieving ambitions, material things and experiences.

At some point, there's a need to re-assess the role these elements play in our current life and whether they are enriching and meaningful for us.

Life events that can prompt reassessment are:

    • reaching an age milestone

    • children leaving home

    • change in work status

    • a sudden realisation that something we'd hoped for is not going to happen

    • the end of a relationship

    • changes in friendships

    • illness or death of a family member or close friend

    • world events

There are some key approaches that will help the de-cluttering process:

    1. Acknowledge to yourself that your situation or thinking has altered in some way

    2. Ask yourself what you want your life to look like in five years' time. This forward vision will inform your future path and objective

    3. In reassessing your present, work out what doesn't fit your vision. Pare down, change or get rid of elements that are no longer necessary

    4. If you're unsure about how to de-clutter, use the theme "simplify my life"

    5. Identify the types of clutter in your life that are impacting negatively on you. They are generally Objects, Obligations, Habits, and People

    6. Identify and prioritise what is still important to you

    7. Be decisive about taking action with the fruitless elements that are no longer important

    8. If you have good justification, letting go of these elements will feel right

    9. The transition is complete when you feel less stuck and more on track to leading an authentic life.
